What A Billion Dollars Gets You in Shaw
With so much construction underway or planned along its corridors, it is no secret that Shaw is a hot development market.
In addition to maintaining a page on this website providing an overview of commercial developments in Shaw, Shaw Main Streets hosts an annual Development Forum every fall. A project of the Economic Revitalization Committee, the most recent forum took place on November 17, 2011 at the Watha T. Daniel Shaw Neighborhood Library. A handful of developers, architects and lawyers gave presentations about ongoing and planned projects for the neighborhood, and, as always, a few developers made surprising announcements at the meeting.
Perhaps the most unexpected announcement of the night was by Paul Millstein of Douglas Development. Millstein revealed that Washington-based online coupon company LivingSocial will take occupancy of 1005-1011 7th Street NW – known as the Acme Stove Building – in the first quarter of 2012. The deal will bring 200 workers to the buildings on a daily basis, further activating the area around the convention center, and Douglass Development is in the midst of a full façade restoration in anticipation of the new tenant.
