Free Black History Month Tour: "Walk with Woodson," 02/18/23
"Walk with Woodson," a walking tour of sites in the Shaw neighborhood that were familiar to Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the Father of Black History, will be presented by the National Park Service on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at 11:00 AM. The tour will begin at the Carter G. Woodson Home National Historic Site, 1538 9th Street, NW and will be led by Shaw historian and Shaw Main Streets Executive Director Alexander Padro and Woodson reenactor Darius Wallace.
Woodson lived and worked on 9th Street from 1922 until his death in 1950. During that time, A. Philip Randolph, Mary McLeod Bethune and Elijah Muhammad lived or worked nearby, among other notables. Neighborhood institutions like Shaw Junior High School, Phyllis Wheatley YWCA and Shiloh Baptist Church were places he visited.
The 90 minute tour is free, but reservations are required. Email [email protected]. For more information on the Woodson Home, visit www.nps.gov/cawo.
