Shaw Main Streets’ success is dependent on the energy and work of our volunteers.
Design Committee
The Design Committee focuses on improvements to the neighborhood’s streetscape and the appearance of buildings in our service area. Sample projects include the installation of metal tree guards in tree boxes, planting of bulbs and perennial flowering plants in tree boxes, operation of the Shaw Clean Team, which supplements the DC Department of Public Works’ trash and graffiti removal efforts, and providing technical assistance to building and business owners who plan to renovate their buildings’ facades or install new business signage.
Economic Revitalization Committee
The Economic Revitalization Committee (Economic Restructuring in official Main Street parlance) emphasizes providing assistance to businesses in locating in the SMS service area and helping new and established businesses become more efficient, profitable, and sustainable. Examples of services include training for business owners and entrepreneurs, social media consulting, marketing and business plan development, and assistance with identifying business expansion and cross marketing opportunities.
Organization Committee
The Organization Committee is responsible for supporting SMS’ operations, including establishing systems for financial management and fundraising, volunteer recruitment, management, and recognition, and publication of the organization’s quarterly newsletter, Shaw Main Streets News. The Committee helps select accountants and auditors, plans and conducts the organization’s annual meetings and holiday parties, and conducts fundraising events, like the Shaw Main Streets Gala.
Promotion Committee
The Promotion Committee plans and implements events and activities designed to increase Shaw’s recognition as an attractive place for shopping, dining and entertainment, and to increase businesses’ sales. Examples include advertising and publicity for new businesses and product offerings, and annual events like Shaw Open House.
