Come Welcome "Symphony in DC Major" to Shaw, 06/11/15!
Work in progress photos of images of 'Duke' Ellington, Colonel Robert G. Shaw, and Alma Thomas
On Thursday, June 11, 2015, from 6:00-8:00 PM, Shaw Main Streets, Roadside Development, and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities will unveil "Symphony in DC Major," a permanent art installation by Zachary Oxman, who created the statue of "Duke" Ellington that faces the Howard Theatre.
The 125-foot-long installation spans six large niches on the 700 block of P Street, NW, at the City Market at O mixed use development. The artwork features images of neighborhood namesake Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, Jazz great Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington, and painter Alma Woolsey Thomas. (Works in progress details of each are included in this post.)
The unveiling ceremony will include live music and food and will be followed by the opening of an exhibition of Oxman's work at Long View Gallery, 1234 9th Street, NW.
"Symphony in DC Major" was commissioned by Roadside Development and funded in part by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, Public Art Building Communities Grant Program, and Shaw Main Streets.
